A 118,000 SF podium style facility including 59,000 SF of Safeway retail and outdoor dining space on the second floor, 6,600 SF of retail space and 52,400 SF of parking, circulation and access space at the ground floor. The elevated podium housing the supermarket is constructed of a cast-in-place concrete long-span beam system to minimize the number of columns in the parking area below. The roof of the supermarket consists of a matching long-span configuration using structural steel and bar joists. This type of construction is the first of its kind in Hawaii and only the second in the nation for Safeway. The client had a very aggressive schedule driven by the desire to get the store completed and opened before the year-end holiday season. BASE helped accommodate the schedule by submitting an early foundation package so that the contractor could begin the site work while the superstructure design was still being completed.

In addition to being structural engineer of record, BASE also provided building code-required special inspections and material testing services. This allowed for seamless coordination between the design and construction of the primary structure.
