SENIOR STRUCTURAL ENGINEER (Chicago)

The Senior Structural Engineer works independently on various projects as assigned by a Principal, and may oversee the entire design process or assist as a technical expert on a specialized design. The Senior Structural Engineer may work on several projects concurrently.

The Senior Structural Engineer has gained extensive experience in all areas of structural awareness and design. This position requires technical expertise and project management responsibility.

Typical Duties

The following duties are typical of the position but are not all encompassing. Each person is expected to help out in whatever duties are required to deliver a quality product on schedule.

  1. Assess the requirements of a project, break a project into tasks, and work with a Principal to determine scope of work, budget and staffing.
  2. Write scope of work for structural design for new or existing structural systems.
  3. Prepare engineering studies and schematic design based on preliminary review and meetings with the client.
  4. Knowledge of applicable building codes. Work with code officials and other design professionals when an interpretation or exception to building codes is required.
  5. Assign and review work of project design team. Check progress of work and alert Principals to change scope or additional services.
  6. Has a thorough understanding of construction process.
  7. Coordinate all aspects of project document completion within company and externally with clients and other design professionals. Proficient written and oral communications skills.
  8. Promote use of and participate in development of company design and production standards.
  9. Assist in the education and development of design staff and act as a resource for design questions.
  10. Maintain neat and organized work area which allows efficient access to project information required by other team members.

Knowledge and Experience Required

  1. 6 to 8 years’ previous design experience.
  2. Bachelors of Engineering Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited university. Masters of Engineering in Civil/Structural Engineering preferred.
  3. Must be proficient in the use of a computer for design and understand CAD/Revit operations.
  4. General knowledge of all aspects of structural analysis and design.
  5. Encouraged to participate in technical and professional societies.
  6. Keep current on the “state of the art” in structural engineering through review of periodicals and continuing education
  7. Completion of Structural Engineering (SE) license exam is required.

Base Salary Range: $100,000-$125,000
