HONOLULU, HAWAII – DECEMBER 8, 2022 – BASE has announced that Hale Kalele was awarded the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Grand Award by ASCE Hawaii Chapter. Completed in May 2022, Hale Kalele was a public-private partnership and an unprecedented cross-agency enterprise between the Hawaii State Judiciary and the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation to transform a State-owned, underutilized urban parcel into a 200-unit affordable rental tower along with a new and upgraded Juvenile Center. In addition, to be mindful of the project’s carbon footprint, the developer, Kobayashi Group, worked with the design and construction team to develop a strategy to reduce the embodied carbon of the project. This included incorporating CarbonCure into the vertical construction which consists of trapping carbon dioxide and injecting it into the concrete mix. The carbon dioxide converts to a mineral in the concrete mix and makes it stronger. This resulted in using up to 5% less cement, which reduced carbon footprint without comprising strength. Hale Kalele is the tallest building to use this technology in the United States.
The Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement awards honors the best and the brightest achievements within the local civil engineering industry and various awards are given to projects that demonstrate innovative and outstanding civil engineering accomplishments by Hawaii’s design and construction professionals. Hale Kalele also won the Best Building and Structural Systems award and will move on to ASCE’s Region 8 Awards competition.
