Hale Mahana provides student housing near the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Chaminade University. The 14-story mixed-use community features amenities such as a rooftop fitness center and terrace, bike storage, laundry facilities, study room, parking and ground level retail.

Portions of the top four floors that needed to cantilever over parking used a “skyhook” support system that employs steel HSS hanger columns supported by upturn post-tensioned transfer beams at the roof. This system allowed for an expanded residential floor area without the need for additional columns throughout the bottom 10 floors. BASE also designed the pile foundation system to address existing underground caverns.

In addition to being structural engineer of record, BASE also provided building code-required special inspections and material testing services. This allowed for seamless coordination between the design and construction of the primary structure. BASE also provided contractor support services that included the design of tower crane foundations, tie backs, and slab blockouts for concrete pumps.
