This modern courthouse in West Hawaii consolidates the dispersed existing court facilities around Kona and centralizes the Judiciary Third Circuit West Hawaii operations into a single location. It houses three Circuit courtrooms, two District courtrooms and two Family courtrooms including Judge’s Chambers, holding areas and spaces for Third Circuit departments and programs.
The structural system consists of a structural steel frame with composite metal deck with concrete topping for the floor systems. Special reinforced concrete shear walls provide the lateral load-resisting system for the high seismicity of the Big Island of Hawaii. The roof was a major element of the building’s aesthetics and architecturally complex in nature. BASE evaluated several approaches and working with the team ultimately selected cold-formed steel trusses to create the unique shape of the roof. The project also included a 10,000 SF standalone central plant.
