Located on Ford Island at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii, Building 26A was constructed in 1935 for an aviation storehouse and an airplane hangar for the Navy’s Fleet Air Base. The facility survived the surprise December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor that took 2,403 American lives and in the 75 years since has seen many changes in use. In 2014, the Navy elected to convert Building 26A into a new training facility for the Center for Security Forces (CENSECFOR). This conversion entailed repairing damage to the existing exterior and analyzing and upgrading the structure for current seismic, hurricane and antiterrorism criteria. A design-build team led by Hensel Phelps Construction Co. was awarded the $15.1 million contract and set out to tackle the upgrade of this historic building.
