Sustainable design is not something we focus on because it’s new or trendy. Our standard since BASE was founded in 1995 has been to focus on designing efficient, cost-effective structural systems to achieve one of the core tenets of sustainable design: the efficient use of materials and resources.
BASE is committed to the reduction of embodied carbon as evidenced by our participation in the SE2050 initiative. Data collected for that initiative has proven that our focus on efficient design has resulted in carbon reduction over the years with BASE-designed structures typically utilizing 10-20% less concrete compared to similar projects designed by others.
BASE embraced a carbon reduction strategy long before carbon reduction became popular. This included obtaining LEED Innovation in Design points for carbon reduction 20+ years ago and continuing to disseminate information on our approaches through technical presentations, writing papers, etc. We continue to integrate sustainable practices, prioritizing low-carbon design solutions throughout all BASE projects worldwide. This commitment is communicated internally to all employees, as well as externally to clients, partners, and stakeholders.
