49 Black Sand Beach, Mauna Lani Beach Resort; Kohala Coast, Hawaii

Located in the prestigious resort community of 49 Black Sand Beach within the Mauna Lani Resort, this masterfully detailed 6,000 SF private beach club presented many structural challenges and stringent detailing. The architect used a Balinese style throughout the complex, which resulted in large open spaces with very thin structural members.  The structural system is a hybrid of convention wood framing, structural steel framing, and White Ash 2x3 rafters.

Client Benefits

Through creative engineering and attention to detailing, the project achieved an authentic Balinese style that meets the local codes while achieving the architect’s design vision.

The Science and Design of Structural Engineering

The architectural vision for the project was rooted in traditional Balinese framing. BASE faced the challenge of providing the same appearance while engineering the structure to modern building code. Achieving these goals required designing and detailing specialized concealed connections as the majority of the framing was exposed. Specially designed steel frames were incorporated to provide lateral support for the ocean front structures. Member sizes were minimized and clad in teak to blend perfectly with the exposed hardwood framing.
